Sometimes : CATALOG GALLERY

My buddy Paul sent me these stills from his exhibit in Gastown at the Catalog Gallery.I Wish I coulda made it out there to see the space myself. I asked him two questions about his show: What nuance this show brings from his previous exhibit (Photographs Inspired by the Rap Music that once Inspired me)? – And the reason he decided to put in a painting.

If you are in YVR, make sure you write it in your schedule, it ends on sept 4th.

I wanted this show to look like a tumblr or a mood board style blog. So there isn’t really a theme, it’s images I shot that are either black and white or are earth tones. There are few winks to the photos inspired by the rap music that once inspired me project on the wall. Most of the original pictures from that project cycled around on those type of websites so it’s kind of a no brainer to tie it back in I think.

I made a sculpture and some letterpress stuff as well that didn’t make it into the show. The space was too small and it didn’t fit with the overall theme. Why did I paint? I guess I’m exercising my license to ill. The painting is my first and it won’t be my last. I did it with Dan Buller from HVW8. It’s a collaborative painting project. It’s new for me and it’s fun. We painted a 1992 16V Gti. The car has an amazing front end. One of my favorite designs from the late 80′s and early 90′s. It’s also a pretty rare car to find intact as it was very popular back then; most of the ones in Quebec were stolen.

DELUXE for Inventory

With the release of the fourth issue of Inventory Magazine just around the corner, here are some outtakes from the shoot I did at the DLXE/BEDWIN offices. Hue and Jey were some of the nicest people I met on my trip. Big thanks to the Inventory crew for making it happen.

Did you pre-order your issue yet??

Nike SFB Chukka QS

The Special Force Boot (SFB) Chukka from NSW takes some inspiration from the US Army Jungle boots of the 1970′s. While the nylon and suede exterior resemble the influencors, Nike have replaced the RO-SEARCH sole from the 70′s with their own NIKE FREE soles giving it that sportswear factor. I wanna thank Claire from NSW for getting these out to me as they will come quite useful when braving the harsh canadian weather.

They should be available at your local Quickstrike Accounts in a Dark Obsidian or Tan colorway.

I WISH THEY MADE THIS FOR GIRLS Vol. 7 | Jade

“The amount of times I’ve actually heard a girl say “I WISH THEY MADE THIS FOR GIRLS” when looking at boys’ clothes goes beyond memory. From that quote, I’ve begun a little Photo Series project with some of the most gorgeous women in my life. Done right, the series should have that inexplicable umph most guys feel when waking up and seeing a girl in his t-shirt and boxers. Dressed in my clothes, they will, one by one be featured on the blog.”

Video : Paul Labonte and/or Paul 107

I’m super excited about this video. It’s my first real video shoot and edit. Paul just wrapped up his new book, ready to be released. You might have encountered some of his previous work either on my blog or on the notorious shelves at Reed Space. With help from Johnny F Kim, and audio assist from Scott, I think we pulled off an awesome result. The book is called : Photographs inspired by the rap music that once inspired me.

Books arrived today. It’s my fourth. It’s already available at the Sometimes/Desfois shop. This one is a book of photo’s. The photo’s I showed at the 381 projects gallery space in the spring of 2008. Last month the people at Anteism Publishing asked me if I wanted to do a small print project with the shots. I agreed to it and Conor Virtue (my long time cohort) agreed to lay it out. Jacob Gavin had curated that 381 Projects show. The idea behind his show was to get creatives who work in and around the music industry to make art based on the music they actually listen to. The music that inspires them. The music that plays when they work. Rap music moves me. Painting pictures with words over sped up soul loops and big drums inspires me. Anybody who has spent any amount of time with me over the 20 years knows that I speak in rap quotes a lot of the time. It’s like the OHHLA site is uploaded to my brain. Hindsight I should have called the book Lose it when dudes think it’s just music. I have this love hate thing with rap. I feel like I spent 25 years of my life trying to justify it’s merits to people and I’m tired now.
